Pilates and yoga have long been praised for their mental, emotional, and physical health advantages. Despite coming from different traditions—Pilates from early 20th-century Europe and yoga from ancient India—these disciplines have much in common with physiotherapy. They work as a potent trio to support strength, healing, and general well-being.

Yoga: What is it?

Yoga is a form of movement meditation that incorporates awareness, deep breathing, and physical postures. With origins that go back thousands of years, it is a tried-and-true method of maintaining good health. Yoga comes in various forms, from physically demanding exercises to peaceful, healing positions. Improved posture, flexibility, balance, and a decrease in tension and anxiety are some of the advantages of yoga. Additionally, it has been shown to alleviate lower back discomfort and enhance sleep quality.

Pilates: What is it?

Pilates is a low-impact workout program that emphasises alignment, flexibility, and core strength. This technique, which was created by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s, frequently uses tools like foam rollers, stability balls, and resistance bands. Pilates has a strong emphasis on precise, controlled movements that improve posture, balance, and bone alignment while also strengthening muscles.

Connecting Physiotherapy with Yoga and Pilates

The goal of physiotherapy is to help patients regain and preserve their strength, function, and mobility following illnesses or accidents. Pilates and yoga support physiotherapy by offering controlled, low-impact exercises that support recovery objectives:

1. Flexibility and Range of Motion: Pilates exercises and yoga stretches can improve joint mobility and flexibility, which can help heal from injuries and stiffness. For instance, positions like the forward fold release tension by stretching the lower back and hamstrings.

2. Core Stability and Strength: A key component of physiotherapy and Pilates is core activation. Back discomfort is lessened, injuries are avoided, and spinal support is enhanced by strengthening the core muscles.

3. Posture and Balance: Improving balance and correcting posture are major goals of many physiotherapy regimens. Pilates exercises and yoga positions improve skeletal stability and alignment, which are critical for preventing injuries.

4. Healing and Stress Reduction: Yoga’s focus on deep breathing and mindfulness can help reduce worry and stress, which aids in the healing process. Better adherence to physiotherapy treatments is another benefit of reduced stress.

5. Customized Rehabilitation: Both practices offer modifications to suit individual needs. Whether recovering from surgery or managing chronic pain, personalized yoga and Pilates routines align with physiotherapy treatment plans.

Manual therapy is a specialised hands-on treatment approach, to diagnose, treat, and prevent neurological and musculoskeletal diseases. Many physiotherapists use it to treat the root cause of musculoskeletal problems, providing a comprehensive approach to healthcare that addresses the body as a whole. Manual therapy includes methods like massage, soft tissue release, joint mobilisation, and manipulation to increase the range of motion, lessen discomfort, and regain function. These methods are intended to treat physical limitations brought on by chronic pain, injuries, or postural abnormalities.

Advantages of Manual therapy:

  1. By concentrating on certain trouble spots, such as tense muscles or stiff joints, and relieving tension, manual therapy can successfully lessen pain.
  2. By improving range of motion, techniques such as joint mobilisation enable patients to move more easily and freely.
  3. Manual therapy promotes better posture by addressing musculoskeletal abnormalities, which can help avoid further injuries.
  4. By boosting blood flow and inducing tissue regeneration, it helps hasten the healing process.
  5. For many diseases, manual therapy provides a safe substitute for medicine or surgery since it is a hands-on, drug-free method.
  6. Because manual therapy is individualised, it guarantees that each patient’s needs are met, addressing both symptoms and underlying causes.

Children with Special Needs and Homeopathy https://thelifecarewellness.com/2024/12/09/children-with-special-needs-and-homeopathy/ Mon, 09 Dec 2024 18:10:41 +0000 https://thelifecarewellness.com/?p=40664 Children with special needs are those who require additional support due to physical, emotional, behavioral, developmental, or intellectual challenges. They face numerous challenges and may need extra time to complete certain tasks, special attention in certain areas, or regular support from doctors, physical therapists, mental health therapists and special educators.

In 2017, Statistics Canada found that one in five (22%) of the Canadian population had one or more disabilities – or around 6.2 million Canadians. Of this number, over 200,000 are children and youth, many of whom live with multiple disabilities.

Connect with us online or at the clinic to better understand if your child needs help.

Children with special needs require additional support in the form of:

  1. Individualised Educational Programmes
  2. Speech, occupational, physical, or behavioral therapies
  3. Familial, community and social support
  4. Medical specialists for specific requirements

Other treatment options

While all the above support is available, parents and caregivers can always explore alternative treatment forms like Homeopathy. Homeopathy can help in the following ways:

  1. Personalised treatment plan tailored to each child’s unique needs.
  2. Carefully choose remedies based on individual symptoms and health factors.
  3. Regular follow-ups and dedicated support throughout the healing journey.

Homeopathy for Children with Special Needs

There are a lot of homeopathic remedies that may be used for children with special needs like: Calcarea carbonicum, Silicea terra, Tarentula hispanica, Baryta carb etc. based on the constitutional features. Apart from these remedies, I have found great results with some rare homeopathic medicines like:

  • Falcon Peregrinus Disciplinatus- Asperger’s syndrome
  • Pavo Cristatus- Autism with sexual excess
  • Sumbulus Moschatus- Learning disorders, ADHD where simple calculations like 1+1 is also difficult.
  • Anhalonium Lewinii- where sense of smell, touch and hearing are greatly intensified.
  • Sarothamus Scoparius- Dyslexia and difficulty concentrating.
  • Bacopa Monnieri- Weak memory, dementia and dyslexia.
  • Banisteriopsis Caapi- Down’s syndrome and delayed milestones.

Diabetes has always been a topic of interest as the number of patients is increasing day by day. Despite giving the best possible treatment most of the time disease represents its complications and sequels. Various traditional and complementary medicines have been used to treat Diabetes. Homeopathy is one such branch, which can positively help diabetics. It is a HOLISTIC system of medicine that treats patients with small doses of highly diluted POTENTISED medicines from natural sources stimulating the body’s natural healing system. This concept has been proved through NANOTECHNOLOGY which says that particles which are tinier than viruses are capable of acting on the human body (Indian Institute of Technology- Bombay, IIT-B).

Homeopathy treats the person as a whole (HOLISTIC) and not only the disease. So, when a person comes for treatment, inquiry for symptoms, investigations, patient’s nature and patient as a person is required.

Homeopathy and Diabetes Mellitus types:

Diabetes Mellitus Type 1: Here, pancreatic beta cell failure occurs, insulin is the only possible treatment, and must be given regularly by injection. There is no homeopathic alternative to insulin. Thus, Homeopathy has virtually no role to play in Diabetes Mellitus Type- 1

Diabetes Mellitus type 2 is a metabolic disorder where there can be partial deficiency or resistance to insulin. From homoeopathic point of view, DM type 2 is a chronic constitutional disorder, therefore we require an individualistic approach as the patient responds to medicine according to its constitution and susceptibility. However, some specific medicines have done wonders in reducing the blood sugar levels.

Homeopathic Management of Diabetes Type 2

  • Help improve the general health of a person with diabetes.
  • If a person with diabetes is in good health, his or her insulin requirements will be steady and the blood glucose well controlled.
  • If the general health is poor, it can be very difficult to achieve good control.
  • Homeopathy can also help to alleviate some of the symptoms of complications like neuropathy, nephropathy, thrush, erectile dysfunctions etc.
  • Main concentration lies on the functioning of the pancreas in efficient insulin production and maintaining blood glucose levels so that inevitable complications can be prevented.
  • Obviously, diet and exercise along with homeopathic medicines will play an important role in the management of Diabetes.
  • Most of the patients who come for homeopathic treatment, are already under insulin replacement. In such cases, treatment is started with homeopathic medicines, along with conventional treatment. After some months, consistent control over the blood sugar levels is seen.

Commonly used homeopathic medicines for Diabetes Mellitus in my practice:

Specific, Acute or Phasic remedies: Helonias, Iodum, Uranium nitricum, Acidicum picricum, Acidicum phosphoricum, Phosphorus, Insulinum

Organ remedies: Syzygium Jambolanum Mother Tincture, Gymnema Sylvestre Mother Tincture

Common constitutional remedies: Natrum Muriaticum, Silicea terra, Lycopodium, Calcarea fluoricum, Calcarea carbonicum, Kali carbonicum,

Agrohomeopathy is a branch of homeopathy where homeopathic medicines including nosodes are used by farmers and gardeners on sick plants and trees and on soil. It is an alternative to the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides in agriculture.

A little bit of History

Homeopathy for plants was first used by a great homeopathic stalwart Dr. Von Boenninghausen. He noted that the excess or leftover remedies he threw into his plant pots were having an effect on the plants.

It was Vaikunthanath Das Kaviraj, an experienced homeopath, who later popularised the use of homeopathy in gardens. He stumbled by accident upon the homeopathic treatment of plants when he was asked to treat a rust problem in apple trees. After thorough understanding of the disease, he prescribed Belladonna and to his surprise the plant healed and produced better. For Kaviraj, this was a turning point, and he worked a lot in this field until he published a pioneering book on homeopathy for plant diseases.

Real Life Case

My cat smashed a container of our monstera plant back in 2016 when I was away from home. When I got home after two days, I saw that the plant was withering and badly damaged. Since it had been with me for six years, I was devastated. Unwilling to lose up, I moved it to a larger container and sprayed the soil and leaves with the homoeopathic medicine Aconitum napellus 12C. To my amazement, the plant was doing well the next day. I began utilising homoeopathy in my garden on a daily basis after that day, and I was always in awe at the outcomes.

Benefits of Agrohomeopathy

  • Chemical-free, non- toxic
  • Improvement in soil quality
  • Reduction in fossil fuels consumption and pollution
  • Economic savings
  • Preservation of natural ecology
  • Sustainable agriculture
  • Makes plants resistant to disease and pests by strengthening them
  • Help increase the nutritional absorption of the plant making them stronger and making them produce truly nutritious food

Common Agrohomeopathic remedies

  • Aconite napellus – light rust
  • Belladonna – red-brown rust
  • Natrum sulphuricum – fungus, brown rot
  • Allium cepa – onion and carrot fly, weevils
  • Calendula – mechanical damage, repotting
  • Carbo vegetabilis – strengthening weak plants
  • Bombyx processionea – caterpillars
  • Bufo rana – pests
  • Bovista – spider mites
  • Camphora – ants
  • Coccinella septempunctata – aphids
  • Helix tosta – snails
  • Cuprum metallicum – mildew
  • Thuja occidentalis – leaf curl, scale insects, spider mites
  • Zincum metallicum – nematodes
  • Ocymum – to keep tomatoes healthy
  • Sambucus nigra – prevention of pests
  • Silicea terra – strengthening resistance, healthy soil, germination
  • Sulphur- increasing the harvest, its quality and overall health of the plants.
  • Natrum muriaticum and Magnesium phosphoricum- better crop quality and harvest.
  • Dulcamara- Effects of water logging, fungal diseases, rust, general problems with photosynthesis, such as discolorations and fungal leaf diseases, injuries.
  • Rhus tox- Premature fruit drop, problems with flowering, absence of pollination, rust and fungal diseases.
  • Actea racemose- Aphids, problems during flowering and fruit setting, premature fruitdrop, fruit fails to ripen.

My curiosity for agrohomeopathy prompted me to study it further, and during my time at the University of Cyberjaya in Malaysia, I oversaw my students’ work on the following research papers, which will be released shortly in peer reviewed journals:

1.The efficacy of homeopathic medicine, Silicea terra 6c, on the growth of Lactuca sativa var. L. using a hydroponic system.

2. Comparison of the effectiveness of homeopathic solutions Sulphur 6c and Silicea terra 6c on plant growth of Raphanus sativus L.

3. Effect of the homeopathic solution Sulphur 6c and 30c on the growth and productivity of Abelmoschus Esculentus L.: A placebo-controlled study.

Scope of Homeopathy in Skin Diseases https://thelifecarewellness.com/2024/01/11/how-does-social-anxiety-affect-the-brain/ Thu, 11 Jan 2024 08:11:35 +0000 https://theme-dev.cmsmasters.net/church-main/i-ruined-my-lifeis-there-hope-for-me/ The causes of skin diseases may range from simple to serious bacterial, viral, or fungal infections, allergens, irritants, immunological and genetic factors. Most of the skin diseases can be diagnosed clinically and only few may warrant investigations.

Skin has been described as the mirror of the body. It reflects the physical, mental, and psychological state of the individual. Skin is also a barrier between the body’s internal and external environments. It is the largest organ in the body and is prone to various affections leading to the fourth largest cause of disability worldwide, according to an updated investigation in the Global Burden of Disease Study 2013. According to the Canadian Dermatology Association, 20% of the Canadians live with acne, 1 million Canadians are diagnosed with psoriasis, 2 million Canadians have rosacea and the incidences of skin cancer are getting higher.

The causes of skin diseases may range from simple to serious bacterial, viral, or fungal infections, allergens, irritants, immunological and genetic factors. Most of the skin diseases can be diagnosed clinically and only few may warrant investigations.

Skin disorders and Homeopathy

In homeopathy, every case requires an individualized and definitive approach to treatment. From homeopathic perspective, all the skin diseases are multi-miasmatic and a careful history taking to analyse the miasm and susceptibility is of utmost importance. Along with this, proper psychodynamic correlation is of utmost importance. Modern psychodermatology relies on the bio‐psycho‐social disease model in psychosomatics, according to which biological, psychological and social factors (on various levels, from molecules to the biosphere) play a major role in the disease pathogenesis through complex, non‐linear interactions over the entire disease course. It is nowadays experimentally proven that “emotions get into the skin”.

Research Updates

Recent research shows close anatomical, physiological and functional connections between skin and nervous system, already known to be ontogenetically related. These connections are reflected in many skin diseases where psychological and somatic etiological factors are closely intertwined. A holistic approach by the physician should do justice to this interdependence; biological, psychological and social factors should be adequately taken into account when taking anamnesis, making a diagnosis and choosing a therapy.

Summary and Therapeutics

Main issues that contribute, according to modern psychosomatics, to the pathogenesis of a skin disease.1

There are a lot of homoeopathic remedies that can be prescribed based on individualised features. Some common remedies for dermatological conditions include:

Mezerium, Kali arsenicum, Thyroidinum, Radium brom, Rhus toxicodendron, Urtica urens, Hepar sulphuricum, Natrum muriaticum, Sulphur, Psorinum, Graphites, Petroleum etc.
